Razer to pay OUYA’s debts to developers despite not having to
Reported by the “Razer acquires OUYA software” press release, “Razer has a long-term vision for Android TV and Android-based TV consoles, such as the Xiaomi Michigan Box and Alibaba Tmall Box, to which OUYA already publishes”.
OUYA’s technological squad and initiator kin group happen to employed on to Razer’s application part, while you are Razer has become answerable for your content register and over the internet direct customer sales system.
Yesterday reports revealed that following the sale of OUYA’s software and technical team to peripheral maker, Razer, OUYA told developers that the money they owed them as part of the Free the Games Fund, will not be honoured.
As originally envisioned, “Free the Games” sought to match Kickstarter funds raised for independent game projects, provided they met certain development milestones and maintained exclusivity to the Ouya platform for a number of months. “This was a marketing campaign for Ouya to bring games to the Ouya platform exclusively”. We didn’t look at the debts because that’s not how the deal was structured for us. “So we are going to try and make good on this fund and give these developers an option”. Unfortunately, due to a clause in the agreement developers signed for this fund, the buyout of Ouya means there is no money coming from Ouya now to those developers who qualified for the Free The Games fund.
“Razer has a real interest in supporting indie developers and furthering the expansion of Android gaming on TV”, the statement continues. The OUYA store will be re-launched as Cortex for Android TV at a later date. Razer must sign new agreements with FtG developers, since there are no existing legal or non-legal developer relationships. Thus far, the developers have not publicly responded to Tan’s offer. The short of it is however, Razer “will be backing the new Ouya publishing arm”.
Tan also mentioned that even though this was a quick plan put together to help those developers out, Razer has much bigger plans for Android TV in the near future. “This is purely being done out of goodwill”, he said. I think this is going to be great for the developers. Gamers will be able to play those games on the Shield with the help of Grid. Then those games will spread through word of mouth. Razer’s credo is “By Gamers”.
‘What we want to do is make sure we support indie developers, ‘ Tan continued.
