Mexico embarrassed by Chile 7-0, eliminated from Copa
Outclassed and outpaced, Mexico struggled to defend Chile’s talented attackers as a unit and it showed with the four goals in 13 minutes.
Puch, who is set to join Liga MX side Necaxa, completed a historic night for the Copa America champions by scoring the embarrassing 7-0.
Mexico are two games away from the Copa America final, and put their 22-game unbeaten streak on the line against defending champions Chile. It certainly was, but not for reasons many expected.
Eduardo Vargas scored four goals and had a fifth called back as Chile roared into the Copa America Centenario semifinals with a 7-0 win over Mexico Saturday at sold-out Levi’s Stadium.
The first one was scored by Edson Puch off of a deflection.
Edson Puch, a late inclusion in the team due to Mauricio Isla’s suspension, began the rout in the 16th minute. We must be very focused in the game, and assume that they will try to cut our work in midfield.
Vidal’s left-foot effort bounced over the crossbar and from a rare attack at the other end, Jose Pedro Fuenzalida’s block denied Carlos Pena a consolation goal. It’s another major tournament where fans can celebrate making it out of the group stage, only to have the fourth match be the last one the team plays in the tournament.
“They have the best players from numerous best leagues in the world”, fullback Paul Aguilar said in Spanish this week at a news conference.
Mexico fans ended the game cheering each pass of the Chilean team, with numerous 70,500 pro-Mexico crowd spilling out of the stadium well before the final whistle.
And just moments later, Aranguiz and Sanchez combined to send Vargas in behind the Mexican defence and he gave Ochoa no chance. What a statement of Chile’s determination to follow up on last year’s Copa win with another strong run in the special 100th-year edition of the tournament.
Playing an aggressive pressing game, the Chileans nearly broke the deadlock in the 10th minute, when Arturo Vidal played a perfectly weighed through ball to Puch, who was thwarted by a last-ditch challenge from Araujo as the ball deflected wide for a corner.
Mexican fans started throwing trash on the field when Sanchez scored Chile’s third goal in the 49th minute.
Vargas extended Chile’s advantage in the 52nd minute, as Sanchez got to the byline, before picking out the Hoffenheim forward, who fired a composed finish past Ochoa.
