Singer on Mexican ‘The Voice’ dies in Chicago after shooting
Victor Gulley, co-founder of A Taste of Theatre Festival in Chicago, said of his friend: “He was one of the most talented people I have ever known”. The Associated Press reports Alejandro “Jano” Fuentes was ambushed while celebrating his 45th birthday with a group of friends outside of his Tras Bambalinas School in the city’s southwest side in Brighton Park. The Chicago Tribune reports Fuentes was shot within a block of his performing arts studio.
Fuentes gained fame in his native Mexico after participating in the Mexican version of The Voice in 2011.
Grimmie, 22, rose to fame on the USA version of the show, which airs on NBC. Ms Grimmie was fatally shot while signing autographs at a concert venue in Orlando on Friday 12 June.
At this time, the Chicago Police Department does not have any suspects in custody. Her assailant killed himself at the scene.
Police initially said he had been pronounced dead soon after the shooting, but he was placed on life support so relatives could arrive from Mexico, according to the newspaper.
