Manny Machado Gets Rocked With 99 MPH Fastball & Attacks Royals’ Pitcher
He’s been writing for ESPN since 2002, and is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania.
Manny Machado, 23, was NOT having it when Yordano Ventura, 25, rocked him in the back with a 99 miles per hour fastball! Machado throws a punch and both continued their scuffle on the ground.
Both teams then cleared their dugouts and rushed to the field to break up the fight.
Chris Tillman has transcended his role as the ace of the Baltimore Orioles. Machado and Ventura were ejected.
Speaking about the fight, Ventura insisted that the ball that stuck Machado was an accident, saying ‘My plan was to pitch inside and one got away.
Orioles manager, Buck Showalter sided with Machado, saying he wasn’t angry at his player for taking matters into his own hands.
“Manny handled it himself and I couldn’t be happier for him, ” Jones said.
Machado jawed at Ventura in his previous at-bat, and the right-hander nailed him around the left hip/lower back with the first pitch when the shortstop came up in the fifth.
On the first pitch of the at-bat, Ventura validated Showalter’s premonition, and Machado took off.
Walker told the media during a press conference before Monday’s postponed game, “This is a place that I have a lot of great memories – a lot of great friendships on the field, off the field, in the community”. He went on to say he believes players generally police this part of the game well. Reactions fly. When someone is throwing 99 (mph) at you, it is going to hurt. You can ruin somebody’s career, so you don’t think in that situation, you just react. “You just have to move forward”. It is likely both will ultimately receive suspensions.
Yordano Ventura’s act on the mound is getting old, and nobody knows that better than Adam Jones. All that matters is we came out with a W. After striking him out to end the inning, Ventura stared down Tulowitzki, even as Royals catcher Salvador Perez tried to wave him off the mound. In the second, with Baltimore leading 5-0, the two exchanged words after Ventura twice threw inside pitches.
The score really doesn’t matter with Ventura.
Machado, perhaps unsurprisingly, did not agree, saying: ‘I was just going up there to put more runs on the board. “I’m thankful for the batters for hitting (into outs)”. “I thought I hit the ball well and it would go out but it didn’t”. He wound up allowing three runs and four hits while finishing seven innings for the first time since July 4 against the Tampa Bay Rays.
“There’s a little frustration when things like this happen”, manager Ned Yost said.
However, he refused to assign blame for the fray. “Obviously, he didn’t like it. I don’t know who’s at fault there”.
