UEFA fines Croatia over Euro 2016 crowd trouble
Modric had given his country a ideal start to Euro 2016 with a sensational volleyed victor to cap a man-of-the-match display to beat Turkey.
Turkey have left it late to bid for a place in the knockout stage of Euro 2016 and need to beat Czech Republic in their final Group D game on Tuesday.
ITV 1 will have live coverage of the game, starting at 7:30pm but you can follow all the build-up with Standard Sport on our daily Euro 2016 live blog.
Croatia have four points from two matches in Group D while two-time reigning champions Spain have six.
La Roja have already assured themselves of a date in the round of 16 after posting clean-sheet victories over the Czech Republic and Turkey. Croatia would still be likely to advance as one of the best third-place teams regardless of Tuesday’s results.
Manchester City midfielder David Silva has claimed that Real Madrid star Luka Modric’s absence from the Croatia team will not affect Spain’s preparations ahead of the game between the two nations.
“We will wait to see his condition and then decide whether he will play or not”, Cacic said. Key striker Mario Mandzukic is also an injury doubt.
The Croatian Football Federation has been fined €100,000 following crowd trouble during the Euro 2016 game against the Czech Republic.
Midfielder Ivan Perisic, who opened the scoring as Croatia dazzled for much of the match in Saint-Etienne, also backed Croatian players and supporters alike to turn around a trying few days. “This will mostly be revenge for the match against them in Prague in the qualifiers when we lost”, the 34-year-old goalkeeper said. The ones who put us in this position should be ashamed of what they have been doing. “We’ve shown what we can do”.
Four years ago, the former UEFA President Michel Platini singled out Croatia fans for criticism. In their only previous competitive meeting, La Roja won 1-0 in the final group game at Euro 2012.
The two-point advantage that late in the match seemed to be enough for head coach Ante Cacic’s squad to come away with their second straight win, but the Czechs were able to equalize the count with two late goals of their own, courtesy of forwards Milan Skoda and Tomas Necid at the 75th and 89th minutes respectively. Under the watchful gaze of coach Vincente Del Bosque, La Roja have not conceded a goal in 690 minutes of play.
“We believe in it, we have a long way to go in this tournament, ” he said.
“We have had a very good start. But it’s still early”.
A similar plan of Saint Etienne’s stadium, venue for the Czech Republic game, was published on the page less than two hours before kick-off.
