Dead Star Trek actor’s car was recalled

Manufacturer Fiat Chrysler’s United States unit issued a recall for hundreds of thousands of Jeep Grand Cherokees and other models in April to address the problem.
The NHTSA said that the design of the cars automatic transmission gear shifter leads drivers to believe they have shifted into “park”, immobilizing the vehicle, when it actually remains in “neutral” or another gear, allowing it to roll after they get out.
The federal agency is also urging owners of Jeep Grand Cherokee and other vehicles subject to a recall to make sure their auto is in park and completely turned off before they get out. If they were not in park and a driver left the vehicle, it could roll away. Officer Jane Kim says the investigation will look into whether the actor’s vehicle was in gear or in park at the time of the accident.
FCA US had identified – as of April 12 – 212 crashes, 308 claims of property damage and 41 injuries potentially related to the design flaw that allowed electronic shifts to spring back to their prior position after being moved to a different gear.
“It is premature to speculate on the cause of this tragedy”, the company said.
His parents, Irina Korina and Viktor Yelchin, were pairs figure skaters who qualified for the 1972 Winter Olympics but were not permitted by Soviet authorities to compete for reasons that are not clear, according to a 1989 article in the Los Angeles Times.
Director J.J. Abrams, who cast Yelchin in the franchise, wrote in a statement that he was “brilliant. kind. amusing as hell, and supremely talented”.
Yelchin, an only child, was born in Russian Federation.
Yelchin started small with roles in indie films and various television shows, before breaking out in films.
“I loved the improvisation part of it the most, because it was a lot like just playing around with stuff”, Yelchin told The Associated Press in 2011. That led him to acting class.
