Ripped shirts, a punctured ball and no goals in 0-0 draw
France and Switzerland are set to face off in a Euro 2016 Group A match on Sunday.
Paul Pogba hit the crossbar in the first half with a swerving shot from 25 metres and substitute Dimitri Payet did the same in the 75th minute with a superb volley following a surging run down the right and cross to the back post from midfielder Moussa Sissoko.
A freakish incident early in the second half saw the ball burst when Valon Behrami challenged Griezmann, with Sommer doing well to keep out the Atletico Madrid forward a few moments later.
The France players who have faced the press since have done their best to dilute the controversy, Pogba’s midfield colleague N’Golo Kante saying: “I didn’t see this gesture that everyone’s talking about”.
Albania 1, Romania 0: In the other Group A match at Lyon, France, Armando Sadiku scored in the 43rd minute and Albania kept its hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages alive with a win over Romania, which was eliminated.
A point was also enough to secure Switzerland’s place in the last 16 and coach Vladimir Petkovic said his team’s next opponents held no fear, whoever they are.
The hosts need only a draw to top Group A. “We’re not through to the knock-out rounds so we’ll play with the best team possible”.
Each nation has played two games in this Euro 2016 tournament and we were able to learn a lot from it after witnessing some of the greatest players on earth and spectacular atmosphere in all stadium across France.
Just after the 10 minute mark, France’s golden boy Paul Pogba curled a shot towards the top corner that Swiss keeper Yann Sommer clumsily fumbled onto the top of the crossbar.
In-form Payet, a former Lille player, had been brought on with 27 minutes left as France chased the opener and the West Ham man nearly grabbed it.
Albania have never scored more than one goal in their 16 games against Romania.
France: Lloris 6, Sagna 6, Rami 6, Koscielny 6, Evra 6, Cabaye 6, Sissoko 7, Pogba 8, Coman 6, Griezmann 7, Gignac 6.
Pogba, 23, was billed as the poster boy of Euro 2016 but he was dropped to the bench for France’s clash with Albania last week after disappointing in Les Bleus’ opening win over Romania.
Albania’s future in the competition depends on what happens over the coming days but coach Giovanni De Biasi said his team will be preparing as though it has a match to play either on Friday or Saturday.
