Wayne Rooney Credits Roy Hodgson for England’s Turnaround Against Wales
Two of those substitutes, Jamie Vardy and Daniel Sturridge, scored the goals in a 2-1 comeback victory that transformed England’s campaign in Group B.
England teams of old would have crumbled when Wales’ Spanish-based superstar Gareth Bale put his side ahead 1-0 just before halftime in a match England had been dominating.
Hodgson sent on Vardy and Sturridge for Kane and Sterling at the break, with their presence galvanising England, who went close when Rooney’s shot was turned round the post by Hennessey.
Ex-England midfielder Ray Wilkins explained that Sterling should never have started England’s Euro 2016 opener against Russian Federation, let alone keep his place against Wales, because he is suffering from a crisis of confidence. “We need a point or three to get through and that is our aim, to go there and get the job done”. A glaring miss at the start of the second half was fittingly the key moment of a Group C match that led to Ukraine becoming the first team to be eliminated from Euro 2016.
“We all know it’s been a long time since Wales qualified, but we want to better that and give it a go”.
“We are still improving, we are not getting too excited”.
“We showed a lot of character today and everyone in the dressing room is delighted”.
England deserved their victory over the 90 minutes against Wales and what I found so encouraging was the vibrancy and resilience of the young players.
“We want to play like we’ve been doing and try to get the win”.
“The manager made some positive changes”, said captain Wayne Rooney, who was one of four England strikers on the field when Sturridge scored.
“The nation’s behind us as normal, we’ll try to embrace the occasion and try to qualify”.
Vardy equalised early in the second half and Sturridge netted a dramatic stoppage-time victor to clinch a 2-1 victory.
Okay, so it wasn’t a ideal match, but in our Football Manager simulation we had England defeating Wales thanks to a late strike from Daniel Sturridge.
“The games come thick and fast”.
“Each team has 23 players”.
“I’ve played a lot of games, a lot of football matches and you have that feeling”. Look at France the previous day against Albania with Antoine Griezmann and Dimitri Payet coming good for them and helping them get through in stoppage time.
“It’s going to be a feature of the tournament”.
Wales next play Russian Federation in their last group B game on Monday.
“Obviously after the game we were very disappointed, especially to lose in that manner. We have to put it to bed as quickly as we can to get ready for Russia”, Coleman said. We normally keep the ball better but they did well pressing.
“I can’t say too much about what his plans are for the next opposition. Gareth Bale was sometimes isolated”.
