Jurgen Klinsmann: We’re not scared of Argentina at all
Adding him to the crop would only make Argentina, who are already the best team at Copa America, even better. The U.S. still has Michael Bradley – but leaves Jurgen Klinsmann with a decision to make about his formation.
It’s not the World Cup, but reaching the final of this expanded 100th anniversary Copa America would be a major achievement for a US team questioned by its growing fan base after it failed to win last year’s CONCACAF Gold Cup. And so its a huge challenge, probably the biggest challenge for us as a defensive unit..
“Two years ago we had Mr. Ronaldo against us in Manaus”.
Playing in the same town, but not the same stadium, where Diego Maradona scored his final goal for Argentina in the 1994 World Cup, Messi put on the show so many had come to see. I am not the type of person who pulls out old stories and tells the players how we did it.
He left the club in 2014 to be available for national duties, but Brazilian football authorities chose to give another chance to their 2010 World Cup coach Dunga. “We left Portugal behind, we left Ghana behind”.
“Anything is possible in knockout games”.
“Well, [Messi] has faced various ways of playing him”, Martino said. “Dream big. Why not?” The last three times were in 1993, 1995 and 2007. It would be a question on how effective he would be as he might be suffering a back injury. He sat out the opener against Chile.
The Barcelona superstar scored his fourth goal of the tournament in the 60th minute at the Gillette Stadium to equal Gabriel Batistuta’s long-time Argentina global goalscoring record.
Messi’s supporting cast is also formidable, led by his Barca teammate Javier Mascherano and Napoli forward Gonzalo Higuain.
Certainly all the pressure will be on Argentina, who are the only team in the tournament to win all four of their matches, including a ruthless 4-1 quarter-final win against Venezuela. He’s arguably the best American soccer player right now.
Lamela, in contrast, got his first start of the tournament against Bolivia and played very well, scoring the opening goal of the match with a free-kick. The players and coaches on the usa side are completely different now, so fans are hoping for a different result.
“I don’t think there’s a comparison to that guy”, defender Matt Besler said. On Tuesday night, the USMNT will have to deal with the best soccer player on the planet, Lionel Messi, for a full 90 minutes. Oh, and doing it without three suspended starters. Jermaine Jones, Bobby Wood, and Alejandro Bedoya have all started every match for U.S. at Copa America. But how does the United States of America do that without Wood, Bedoya and Jones (likely replaced by Kyle Beckerman)? Kyle Beckerman or Graham Zusi will most likely replace Jones in the midfield, and forward Chris Wondolowski could start up top for Wood.
Wood’s replacement could be Chris Wondolowski or Gyasi Zardes.
As for former Furman University soccer player Clint Dempsey, he is ready to represent his native town of Nacogdoches, Texas.
