Detroit city hall, county courts reopen after gun scare
Now police are still investigating how a different person may have carried a gun in a bag through security screening at the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center without triggering alarms until the man had disappeared. That includes having your bag x-rayed to make sure that you’re not carrying a weapon. City offices in the building were ordered closed throughout the day Monday, with normal operations expected to resume Tuesday, according to Duggan’s office. And he did so while apparently carrying a handgun in his bag that was x-rayed.
The search for a man who brought a gun into the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center in downtown Detroit on Monday, triggering an evacuation, continued on Tuesday. An X-ray scan appears to show a revolver in his briefcase. He walked in around 8:40 am. According to Detroit Police, the building is still being evacuated.
“Someone should have told us”.
Craig said police believe the man may still be in the building.
Craig said they also are looking at how the suspect passed through security.
Andrew Sokoly, a member of Benson’s staff, said he was in his office with a few other staffers a little before 9:30 a.m. when an announcement over the public address system said to stay inside and lock the door.
“All we know now is (the suspect is) described as male, white, dark suit, and we’ll get to the bottom of it”, Craig said.
He said the department has been working for months on a plan to add uniformed, off-duty officers to the building to embellish security. We have all got to be on the same sheet of music.
It was “kind of scary with what’s been going on lately”, said Kulman, referring to the shooting in Orlando in which 50 people were killed, including the gunman.
Police and several other law enforcement agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, spent all of Monday searching for a man who was believed to have a gun in the building after it was photographed during a security scan.
Detroit police Sgt. Michael Woody says in a release Monday evening that the man in the photos was identified and interviewed by investigators. He could have said “uh oh i have a gun in my briefcase” and just took off.
