Paul Ryan: ‘It’s Not My Job to Tell Delegates What to Do’
“We start pretty much after the convention”, Trump said, adding that presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton has had a “head start” in her campaign.
“We’re going to go onto a great victory”.
Iowa GOP delegate Cecil Stinemetz also warned that there was nothing the GOP could do to stop Trump from further embarrassing the party if it made him the nominee. He called Trump’s remarks about a judge of Mexican descent a “textbook” example of racism, criticized his proposed Muslim ban as not reflective of the party’s principles, and reiterated Sunday that he continues to have policy disagreements with the presumptive nominee. “And, you know, I guess I’m at nearly 1,600”, he said, referring to the 1,542 delegates he’s secured. Trump said. “They have to [help], otherwise I’ll just keep doing what I’m doing, I’ll just keep funding my own campaign…for me, that’s the easy way”, he said. Look, believe me, Chuck.
In the meantime, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, U.S. Rep. Fred Upton, R-Mich., and other Republican officials announced they would not vote for Trump in the November election. “I can win one way or the other”, he claimed. I think they should go about their work.
“This literally is an “Anybody but Trump” movement”, Colorado delegate Kendal Unruh, who backed Texas Senator Ted Cruz in the primaries and is leading the anti-Trump effort, told the newspaper. I don’t have a plan to do that, ‘ the House Speaker said at his weekly press conference.
“I obviously won the primaries without them, I’m an outsider and I won the primaries”.
Still, Ryan suggested Sunday that he wouldn’t tell a Capitol Hill Republican seeking reelection on any party member to back Trump for the benefit the party in 2016.
“You see the crowds I’m getting, you saw last night in Houston, you see today in Nevada, I think we’re going to do very, very well”.
Republican delegates and lawmakers have warned against such extreme measures, saying that steps like these could cause a revolt among Trump supporters or harm the party’s image by ignoring the will of the grassroots.
“With or without the Party’s support?” the reporter asked.
The anti-Trump push comes as the real estate mogul has careened from one controversy to the next since mathematically clinching the nomination in May.
