Attorney general visits Orlando in wake of deadly attack
Orlando police say officers rushed to the scene just two minutes after the initial call of shots fired at the pulse nightclub and inside engaging the gunman four minutes later forcing him into a bathroom in the club, where he barricaded himself with hostages. The Sun Sentinel reported Tuesday that Florida’s Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is investigating G4S, the security firm that employed Mateen, for a false statement on a character certification form that allowed the gunman to acquire a state license to carry firearms. It’s unclear who purchased the tickets.
U.S. Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch was in Orlando Tuesday, where she got an update on the federal case. “I am so inspired by the strength and the resilience of the survivors and their loved ones”, Lynch said. In an interview with Time, she said: “He might have been homosexual himself and lived that lifestyle but could never ever come clean about it because of the standards of his father, because of the obligation to be a flawless son”. But Lynch, speaking on Sunday morning talk shows, said federal investigators are still unresolved as to what drove him to violence and to what extent he may also have been motivated by anti-gay hatred.
Investigators are still looking into the motives for his rampage.
In an accompanying article, Miguel reportedly told Salinas that Mateen didn’t like Puerto Ricans because of an unprotected threesome he had with men he met at Pulse.
Miguel, who appeared on the network wearing a disguise, said that he met Mateen a year ago through a gay dating site and that the two began a “friends with benefits” relationship shortly after.
“I believe this is not terrorism”, Miguel said despite investigators saying Mateen pledged allegiance to ISIS. Trying to shield Americans from the truth, and undermining their confidence in what the federal government is telling them, might be a more risky action. The Department of Justice is making $1 million in emergency funding available to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. But as with the transcripts of the 911 call Mateen made from inside his killing zone, which were first released Monday with redactions, then released later Monday with full transcripts, that transparency would come over time, she said.
President Obama on June 16 described the Pulse nightclub massacre as “an attack on the LGBT community” when he spoke to reporters after he and Vice President Biden placed bouquets at a makeshift memorial to the victims in downtown Orlando. This afternoon, I will meet with state and local law enforcement and first responders.
Lynch and authorities took some heat Monday after issuing a redacted transcript of Mateen’s call to 911 after the first burst of shooting in which he claimed responsibility for the attack and pledged allegiance to the ISIS terror group and its leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. He told Univision that he believed Mateen’s wife knew that he went to gay bars and that his marriage was to hide the fact that he was “100 percent” gay.
“I think there’s this misconception that we didn’t do anything for three hours”, Mina said.
