The Kerala Police has approached its Karnataka counterparts to register a case against two college students for brutally ragging a Dalit nursing student from Kerala.
“She told us now that she had been getting ragged in the past few months”.
Aswathy was reportedly ragged by a group of eight senior girls at the women’s hostel of the college on 9 May. They didn’t allow us to leave home even during vacation.
The student, Ashwathy, who is a first-year student, was allegedly forced to drink toilet cleaner by her senior students.
A source in the hospital said the girl’s condition was stable.
Victim is studying at Al Qamar College of Nursing in Gulbarga, Karnataka.
Explaining the delay in filing a case, he said that though she had informed them about the ragging on returning home, the family made a conscious decision not to lodge a complaint.
Ashwathy needs an endoscopic procedure, but as her food pipe is burnt, the doctors are helpless.
The girl is reported to have joined the college just four months ago with an education loan as her family can’t afford her educational expenses.
“She went to the college healthy and happy”. In a letter to her advocate, the girl said the police failed to record her statement since she could not speak. She vomited blood and collapsed after drinking the liquid. “Is this what we sent her to a nursing college for”, asked Bhaskaran.
Mr. Shashikumar said a senior officer would be appointed as the investigating officer after the case is transferred to Kalaburagi and a thorough investigation conducted. Primary investigations are on. “We are planning an endoscopic surgery later”, the source said.
Following that, she was admitted to Intensive care unit (ICU) of medical college with severe stomach problems.
