Abby Wambach aiming to chase gold again in Rio
“Yeah, we won the World Cup and I’m so thrilled to bring home the cup, but fans didn’t see the best soccer they could have seen”.
Speaking on “Good Day Rochester” on Fox Rochester in her New York hometown, Wambach said: “What’s next for me, my life plan?” But the entire comment, made on live TV and posted on the station’s site, didn’t sound as definitive. I’m planning on playing next summer in Rio, but I gotta let my body recover. “In my head, I’m planning that I’m going to play but I still haven’t made a decision if I’m going to or not”.
“It was disgusting the whole tournament”, Wambach said of the turf. She has not closed the door on trying for her fifth Olympic team. Considering the Reign play on artificial turf and don’t really have any prospects for getting a grass pitch, the chances of Wambach ever playing here only seem to have diminished from “unlikely” to “almost certainly never”.
Vertelney emphasizes Wambach’s status for the U.S. Women’s National Team for the Summer Olympics in 2016 is still uncertain.
Wambach is on vacation right now, recovering from the World Cup.
The 35-year-old said after winning the World Cup in Canada that she would take the following weeks and months to make a decision regarding her future on the field.
All four forwards from the 2012 Olympic team (Alex Morgan, Sydney Leroux, Amy Rodriguez and Wambach) were on the United States team that won the 2015 Federation Internationale de Football Association Women’s World Cup earlier this month.
But Wambach was praised by her teammates and coach Jill Ellis for her leadership from the bench and in practice. “I’m excited to go and vacation, get away from a little bit of the whirlwind I’ve been on, to rest, relax and to be able to make maybe some of those future decisions”.
