Colon expected to start Sunday for Mets despite thumb injury
After the game, Mets manager Terry Collins raved about a player that could be working his way into an important super-utility role.
The Mets need Colon to stay healthy because Zack Wheeler’s return from Tommy John surgery is dragging on deeper into this season.
“We’ve just got to keep grinding, we’ve got to go with what we have”, Walker said.
The ball deflected to second baseman Neil Walker, who threw to first for an out. “So we’ll see what happens and see what’s going on”.
Bailed out by Matt Reynolds’ first career home run, Syndergaard improved to 8-2 on the year as a result of the Mets’ 4-3 victory. “He takes some swings and it comes off the bat”, Collins said. “I don’t even know if he’s played left field before”. “Any time when you’re a hitter, and a you’re big hitter and your hands and your wrists have problems, it’s a concern”.
Outfielder Yoenis Cespedes also departed in the same sixth inning Wednesday with what ultimately was diagnosed as a mild sprain of his left wrist.
“I felt comfortable”, Reynolds said. An MRI later revealed no structural damage and he is expected to resume normal activities as early as Thursday. The team announced that he received a cortisone injection for sensory nerve irritation in his right elbow, but that his surgically repaired elbow otherwise is sound.
The Mets complete a 2-game sweep of the Royals, as Kansas City continues to struggle away from home. The Mets (38-32) swept the two-game World Series rematch from the Royals (38-33) and finished 3-1 this season against Kansas City, which won last year’s Fall Classic in five games. The home run was the first of his career and the Mets defeated the Royals 4-3.
Kansas City Royals Cheslor Cuthbert watches his solo home run to left field during the fifth inning of an interleague baseball game against the New York Mets, Wednesday, June 22, 2016, in New York. He gave up eight hits and three earned runs over six innings.
Bauer (5-2) struck out 10, walked one and allowed only one runner past second base. Jerry Blevins would replace the Mets’ starter in the following inning.
Cespedes was 2 for 2 with a walk before leaving after the fifth inning of the Mets’ 4-3 win.
Aledmys Diaz hit a two-run home run, and Matt Carpenter had a two-run double in a five-run sixth after Arrieta (11-2) left the game. “I didn’t really have too many plays that tested me today but I felt very comfortable”. Paulo Orlando scored on a Brett Eibner single in the 5th for the Royals lone run.
Despite never playing a professional game in the outfield, Reynolds appeared ready for the task.
NEW YORK – Charlie Blackmon led off the game with a home run and later connected for another solo drive, and Nolan Arenado hit his major league-leading 21st homer for Colorado.
Cabrillo grad Danny Duffy got the start for the Royals but took a no decision.
