Chile beats Colombia 2-0 to return to Copa America final
Chile got started quickly and beat Colombia 2-0 in Chicago, Illinois on Wednesday in a match that also featured a two-hour weather delay.
The Paris Saint-Germain attacker had been on course to face defending champions Chile in a rematch of the 2015 final on Sunday, but suffered an “evolution” of his initial injury. Chile, who had destroyed Mexico 7-0 showed no signs of slowing down, as they were two goals up against Colombia by the 11th minute.
Charles Aranguiz put Chile on top in the seventh minute, and Jose Fuenzalida doubled the lead four minutes later.
The second half of the game was delayed due to bad weather conditions in Chicago.
It will be the second time the two teams – Chile and Argentina – will clash in two summers. When their defense broke down, Claudio Bravo was there.
Chile, who were already missing midfielders Arturo Vidal and Marcelo Diaz, lost Pedro Pablo Hernandez after half an hour when he limped off injured and the resulting reshuffle took the wind out of their sails. Colombia will take on United States in the play-off for third place.
Each nation picked up right where they left off.
In what has been an impressive tournament for Lionel Messi’s Argentina, the wing position normally occupied by Di Maria has been jinxed. Roger Martinez’s drive was stopped by a diving Bravo midway through the first half, and Bravo denied Sanchez with another lunging stop right before halftime.
Juan Cuadrado was unfortunate to have assisted the first goal, after heading down a cross for Aranguiz. His long-distance shot was deflected by the post, but the rebound fell to Fuenzalidaand the winger made things 2-0.
