Coastal Carolina avoids elimination
Coastal Carolina put up three spots in the third and fifth inning on Thursday night eliminating Texas Tech from the 2016 College World Series, taking out the last remaining national seed.
Thursday’s win sees Coastal Carolina setting up a rematch with TCU, which will be streamed live on ESPN3, WatchESPN and ESPN at 8 pm ET on Friday.
Arizona has a loss and would have to defeat the Cowboys twice to advance to the finals, and Coastal Carolina faces the same win-two-or-go-home scenario on the other side of the bracket.
The senior went on to toss 83 pitches in 4 1/3 innings, holding the Red Raiders to three hits to earn the win.
Oklahoma State shut out its first two opponents at the College World Series and has allowed only five earned runs while winning all seven of its NCAA Tournament games.
In the top of the third, the Chanticleers would take the one-run lead back on two costly Texas Tech errors, including one from Eric Gutierrez.
The Chanticleers swept No. 8 LSU on the road in super regionals, and they beat No. 1 Florida in their CWS opener. But Morrison struck out the next two batters – the second after a 3-0 count – to get out of the inning unscathed and preserve his team’s one-run lead. Tech had the bases loaded with only one out, but Coastal Carolina’s Morrison struck out Davis and Floyd to retire the side. The first run scored on a second-inning single to open the game’s scoring. The Red Raiders used four different pitchers on the evening.
The College World Series is split into two brackets, which will play in a double-elimination format June 18-24/25, and the two bracket winners will meet in the CWS Finals June 27-28/29.
The Chants answered with three runs in the top of the third to regain a one-run lead. Stephen Smith followed with a three-run double to the left center field gap to gain the advantage.
The Horned Frogs beat CCU 6-1 in the second round on Tuesday evening and the Chanticleers will certainly be looking to avenge that defeat, as they seek to play for the national championship next week.
“We obviously fundamentally were not real good today”, Texas Tech head coach Tim Tadlock said. Tech set the table with a Tanner Gardner single and a Cory Raley walk. Senior second baseman Tyler Chadwick’s strike out in the next at-bat left Coastal Carolina hoping for something out of nine-hole hitter David Parrett and his.130 batting average in order to cash in the run, and Parrett delivered.
“He’s the most fit guy, the hardest working guy, the most positive young man”, Coastal Carolina coach Gary Gilmore told MLB.com after the game.
