Emotions High As Walsh Meets With Boston Latin Staff 04:43
Boston Mayor Marty Walsh also attended the private meeting inside Boston Latin on Thursday.
Assistant headmaster of Boston Latin School Malcolm Flynn stepped down following the resignation of the school’s headmaster over racism-related investigations.
Members of Boston’s black community said they were “satisified” with Teta’s resignation, but claimed issues of “long-term structural inequity” are prevalent throughout Boston’s public school system.
He reportedly said it presented a false representation of the school and that an ongoing investigation launched by the U.S. Attorney’s Office could have been prevented had Chang defended the school. In one case, a student threatened to lynch a 15-year-old black female classmate and called her a racial slur. “It is unfortunate that at a time when Boston Latin School has made tangible progress to combat racism in our community through constructive dialogue fostered by the student body, others outside the school continue to condemn us, denounce us, and hold us responsible for district policies and practices over which the school has no control”, Teta wrote in her resignation letter.
Her tune changed Tuesday when she announced she’d be leaving her post at the end of the school year.
“Under Lynne’s guidance, BLS faculty worked with student leaders to develop a comprehensive plan to create a more welcoming and inviting environment for all students”.
“If failure to act appropriately is incompetence, or failure to act at all, I suppose that’s a fair word”, Flynn said. Mayoral spokeswoman Bonnie McGilpin said Walsh never instructed anyone not to speak with the press, and though he “never wavered” in his support for the school, he would not ignore reports of students feeling unsafe.
Founded in 1635, Boston Latin is the nation’s oldest public school and considered to be the city’s most prestigious exam school.
