Anton Yelchin’s Death May Have Been Caused by a Defective Jeep Model
According to Jalopnik, Yelchin was killed by his 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee after the 5,000 pound vehicle rolled backwards down a slight hill on his driveway as he passed behind it, crushing him against a brick mailbox.
It has not been determined whether this defect was the reason the vehicle rolled into Yelchin.
After initially aiming to have the new software by the end of the year, the automaker said in May 24 a letter to dealers that the remedy would be ready no later than August.
The company had told owners it hoped to come up with a “permanent” remedy later this year.
“Actor Anton Yelchin was killed in a fatal traffic collision early this morning”, a statement from his representative confirmed.
TheWrap noted Fiat Chrysler said it was still too soon to place blame on the Jeep for Yelchin’s death.
Meanwhile, the cast of the Star Trek franchise is mourning the loss of Anton.
The shifters in those vehicles are equipped with electronic shift levers that return to the same central position after a different gear is selected. This caused many drivers to leave their vehicles thinking they’d put their cars in park when they hadn’t successfully done so-resulting in 41 injuries, 212 crashes, and 308 total incident reports.
The NHTSA media office did not respond to a request for comment by Monday evening. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles recalled 1.1 million other vehicles in April for similar issues with the transmission.
Jeep Grand Cherokees were in the process of being recalled because the gear shifters have confused drivers, causing the vehicles to roll away unexpectedly.
As of the time of this posting, the investigation into Anton Yelchin’s death is still on-going. “It doesn’t turn people away but it is bittersweet and poignant when that actor appears on screen”, Dergarabedian said.
Justin Lin, who directed “Star Trek Beyond”, paid tribute to Yelchin’s “passion and enthusiasm” while Mark Hamill, who plays Luke Skywalker in the “Star Wars” films, lamented that Yelchin had “his whole career ahead of him”.
“You were amusing as hell and supremely talented”. And you weren’t here almost long enough, ‘ he said.
“What a rare and lovely soul with his unstoppable passion for life”, said Jodie Foster, whose 2011 film The Beaver co-starred Yelchin. “As a member of the Star Trek family, he was beloved by so many and he will missed by all”.
