Bulls end Rose era, send him to Knicks
CBS Sports writes that trading Rose is actually a relief to the Chicago Bulls, and a risk for the New York Knicks.
NY traded center Robin Lopez, guard Jose Calderon and guard Jerian Grant to Chicago in exchange for Rose, guard Justin Holiday and a 2017 draft pick on Wednesday.
With that being said, all Bulls fans including myself, with miss Derrick Rose a little bit.
While he was battling several injuries and working tirelessly to regain his old form, some fans have turned on Rose. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2008 draft was the NBA’s Rookie of the Year, a 3-time All-Star and the 2011 league MVP.
Once Rose got word the Bulls were looking to trade him, the source said, he hoped it would be to the Knicks.
With Rose playing on an expiring deal in 2016-17 and will hit unrestricted free agency, next summer here are 10 National Basketball Association teams that could look to add Rose as their 2017-18 point guard. They signed Robin Lopez to a four-year contract last summer.
Grant, 23, added 5.6 points and 2.3 assists a game in 2015-16 while Lopez, 28, averaged 10.3 points and 7.3 rebounds last season.
“This is an exciting day for NY and our fans”, Knicks Head Coach Jeff Hornacek said. But life doesn’t always work that way and given how hard it’s been for him the past four seasons, going to NY is a welcome change of scenery for the once mighty star.
Hill and Teague both have one year left on their current deals and each is scheduled to make $8 million this season.
As far as the draft Thursday, New York, having used its trade assets to acquire Rose, can only reasonably buy second-round picks.
With Brook Lopez now in Chicago, the Knicks greatly needs a defensive anchor in the middle, and Noah fits the billing perfectly having been named Defensive Player of the Year three years ago.
Rose is the first former MVP on the Knicks’ roster since Bob McAdoo, who last played for the Knicks in 1978-79. Now armed with having to be paid 21 million plus before becoming a Unrestricted Free Agent, he goes to the Knicks with plenty of questions that may not be answered in 1 year. That could put the Bulls in contention for free-agent point guards like Chris Paul and Russell Westbrook. Depth is going to be key should Rose be able to make it throughout the season healthy.
