Chicago’s Patrick Kane wins the Hart Trophy as NHL MVP
On top of the Hart, he also won the Art Ross Trophy as the player with the most points at the end of the regular season with 106.
Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane was named Hart Trophy victor as the NHL’s most valuable player during the 2015/2016 regular season. He won one final award this year, the Ted Lindsay Award, given to the most outstanding player as judged by the NHL Players Association – the Hart Trophy is voted on by the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association.
While dealing with an off-ice rape accusation which ultimately proved false, Kane put together a 26-game point streak from October 17 through December 13, setting a Blackhawks record and a mark for U.S.-born players. The next closest competitor was Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, 595 points behind Kane with only 11 first-place votes.
“I still think I can get a lot better”, Holtby said.
The Norris Trophy was awarded to Los Angeles defenceman Drew Doughty, who beat out Sweden’s Eric Karlsson of Ottawa and Canadian Brent Burns of San Jose. “Yeah, it’s really special to me”.
“To my teammates, without you, I couldn’t have done it”, Doughty said. I don’t know if I was lucky or fortunate to be in that position, but it’s pretty fantastic to see some American record you hold now. He is the first Kings’ player to win the Lady Byng Trophy, awarded to “the player who best exhibits sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability”, since Wayne Gretzky in 1994. Andersen, who was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs earlier in the week, and Gibson were beaten just a combined 192 times in 2015-16. It feels great to just win that award after the history of it.
Kane’s linemate, Artemi Panarin, beat out Philadelphia Flyers defenceman Shayne Gostisbehere and Edmonton Oilers forward Connor McDavid for the Calder Trophy as the top rookie, while Barry Trotz of the Washington Capitals won his first Jack Adams Award as coach of the year on a third try. He was second in the National Hockey League with a plus-34 rating and third among forwards in SAT (57.5 percent).
Pittsburgh’s Jim Rutherford was named General Manager of the Year after making sevearl moves, including a midseason coaching change, that turned the Penguins from a team out of playoff contention into the Stanley Cup champion.
The 44-year-old Jagr sparked the Panthers to franchise records for wins (47) and points (103) while capturing their second division title.
Kane, 27, became the only Blackhawks player to ever take home the award after starting the season with a bang and never looking back.
