Trevor Rosenthal: Trevor Rosenthal gives up three-run homer
The home run helped the Mariners erase a two-run deficit and snapped a six-game losing skid. Volquez (7-7) retired only three of the 15 batters he faced with 12 scoring, ballooning his ERA more than a full run to 5.15.
St. Louis closer Trevor Rosenthal doesn’t know what the future might hold, and he’s not even sure what’s gone on in the recent past.
St. Louis (38-34) spoiled another strong outing from starter Carlos Martinez, who allowed one run off four hits over seven innings. They opened the ninth with a double by Kyle Seager, and then Dae-Ho Lee walked on a 3-2 pitch before Lind drove a 1-1 pitch over the right field wall.
Long on overtaxed pitching, Seattle Mariners manager Scott Servais was asked how long a leash recently-acquired, off-the-scrap-heap starting pitcher Wade LeBlanc would have in his team debut Friday night. It’s Rosenthal’s third blown save of the season.
In the ninth, Lind said he wanted to be patient and let Trevor Rosenthal throw a pitch or two.But on a 1-1 count, Rosenthal lofted an 88 miles per hour changeup that Lind hit 417 feet into the stands in right.
It also saved the Mariners from the ignominy of losing a game in which the Cardinals scored all of their runs in the eighth inning without getting a base hit.
That was all the Mariners could get off St. Louis’ hard-throwing starter, Carlos Martinez, who was pretty much the opposite in style from LeBlanc, regularly hitting 99 miles per hour.
Jeff Gordon previews today’s game between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Seattle Mariners at 9:10 p.m. (FSM) at Safeco Field in Seattle. These two teams haven’t met since the 2013 season and the Cardinals haven’t played in Seattle since 2002. Nick Vincent pitched a flawless seventh but it fell apart for Seattle in the eighth.
LeBlanc left with a 1-0 lead after Lee’s bases loaded groundout in the sixth scored Seth Smith from third.
“Throwing strikes, changing speeds”.
In his debut for the Mariners, Donn Roach was the victor with 1.2 innings after Benoit. Seager appeared to think the grounder was going to bounce higher, but it stayed down and rolled into left field allowing a pair to score.
Roach (1-0) escaped the eighth and pitched the ninth to get his first win.
“We were able to make something happen there in the eighth, it’s just a shame we couldn’t finish it off”, St. Louis manager Mike Matheny said. The loss raises Rosenthal’s season ERA to 5.63 and his record to 2-3. Rollins is making his second stint with Seattle this season, while Roach has been a starter in the minors with Tacoma but is being brought up as a reliever.
BULLPEN INTRIGUE: Wednesday’s easy 7-2 victory, combined with Thursday’s day off, allowed the late-inning specialists to catch a much-needed breather. Karns’ last win came on May 30 against San Diego.
