Belgium knocks out Sweden in Ibrahimovic’s last game
The striker announced he would retire from the national team at the end of Euro 2016 and a 1-0 loss to Belgium brought an end to Sweden’s campaign.
After being all level in Sweden and Belgium’s Group E draw at halftime Nainggolan managed to score a stunning 85th minute goal to put Belgium ahead in the dying minutes of the game.
In his 116th and last game for Sweden, Ibrahimovic forced a save from Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois in the 76th minute with a free kick and saw other shots go wide, including a volley in the 86th. He said Tuesday that he was retiring from worldwide soccer after the tournament. Shortly before the winning goal, a header from Andreas Granqvist was cleared off the line by Kevin de Bruyne.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic was left proud of his achievements with Sweden after his worldwide career came to an end on Wednesday.
Belgium will only be eliminated if it loses heavily to Sweden, or if it loses and Ireland beats already-qualified Italy.
Sweden captain Zlatan Ibrahimovic will be making his last appearance for his country if they fail to reach the knockout stages.
“I’m very proud of my career”, Ibrahimovic said. Another player with ankle issues, Mousa Dembele, is on the bench. His strike partner is Marcus Berg.
