Indonesia vows more decisive action after Chinese ship spat
China’s expansive claims to the South China Sea do not include the Natuna islands, which are almost 2,000 kilometers from the Chinese mainland in waters between Malaysia and Borneo.
Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs spokesman Charles Jose told reporters that all of the ASEAN foreign ministers initially agreed on the text of the joint statement, but that some may have changed their mind later.
While noting Mr. Duterte’s efforts to curb Chinese expansion in the South China Sea would likely fall short of such theatrics, “those tensions are not going to end anytime soon”, Mr. Cronin said.
In March Chinese coastguards rammed a boat detained near the Natunas and helped it escape as the Indonesians towed the vessel to shore.
“This is not a clash, but we are protecting the area”, Kalla said in an interview with Reuters at the presidential palace.
While she was secretary of state, Hillary Clinton said in 2012 that opposition to the treaty was “based in ideology and mythology, not in facts, evidence, or the consequences of our continuing failure to accede to the treaty”.
The Indonesian navy said that seven sailors and a Chinese-flagged vessel were detained but insisted no one was hurt.
China has said it recognises Indonesia’s sovereignty over the Natuna Islands themselves.
Indonesia is not part of the broader regional dispute over China’s reclamation activities in the South China Sea and Beijing’s claims on swathes of critical waterways.

The inaugural COSCO route to the Xisha Islands will be followed by the development of other routes in the South China Sea and Taiwan Straits, with a gradual expansion to worldwide routes, in a bid to build China’s first national cruise brand, the company said.

“We urge the Indonesian side to refrain from any action that complicates or magnifies the dispute, or impacts the peace and stability of the region”, Hua said.
In response, China’s Foreign Ministry condemned the Indonesian navy for its “excessive use of force”.
The commander of the Indonesian navy’s western fleet said he suspected the incursions were “structured”, indicating the Chinese government had “given its blessing”.
“There’s no reason for Indonesia to have problems with China because Indonesia is actually in a position where everything is clear – the EEZ – is clear”, he said on Monday.
In recent months China has had several other encounters with Chinese fishing vessels operating with its EEZ.
Friday’s incident came amid what many have called China’a growing assertiveness in the resource-rich South China Sea, most of which is claimed by the country.
Chinese officials have repeatedly stated they do not recognize the court’s legitimacy in the South China Sea dispute and will not adhere to the decision should it find in favor of the Philippines.
But Beijing’s claims to fishing rights near the Natunas and some 3,000 kilometers from its mainland appear to overlap with Indonesia’s exclusive economic zone around the islands.
