Coroner Rules Anton Yelchin’s Death an Accident; Vehicle Known to Have Issues

Yelchin’s publicist confirmed the sad news, saying in a statement: ‘Anton Yelchin was killed in a fatal traffic collision early this morning.

AP say National Highway Traffic Safety Administration records show the model, a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee, was part of a global recall made by Fiat Chrysler in April.

According to police, Yelchin died from blunt force asphyxia when he got out of the vehicle and it rolled down his driveway and pinned him against a brick mailbox and a security fence.

Los Angeles police are investigating Yelchin’s death.

Fiat Chrysler expected to send recall notification letters to owners on May 16, according to a memo to dealers, but it’s not known whether Yelchin received or saw his letter.

Fiat Chrysler spokesman Eric Mayne said the company would conduct a “thorough investigation” of Yelchin’s accident.

Fiat Chrysler has said it is carrying out an investigation but it was premature to speculate on the cause of the crash.

According to New York Daily News, numerous Jeep Grand Cherokee cars, the model of the vehicle that killed Anton were recalled recently for their flaw in parking.

Zaldana took to Twitter on Monday, June 20, 2016, to pour her heart out over the demise of the 27-year-old actor. In 2014, a US study said almost 100 people were killed and 2,000 injured annually from vehicles that rolled away between 2008 and 2011. If they were not in park and a driver left the vehicle, it could roll away.

The recalled vehicles have an electronic gear stick that can be pushed forward or backward to let the driver select the gear. It sounds a chime if the door is opened while the engine is still running – but will not automatically shut down the ignition.

Thousands of Jeep Grand Cherokees were a part of a voluntary recall because they had a confusing gear stick design that made people forget the auto was in neutral and not in park when they got out of the vehicle.

The NHTSA media office did not respond to a request for comment by Monday evening. This caused many drivers to leave their vehicles thinking they’d put their cars in park when they hadn’t successfully done so-resulting in 41 injuries, 212 crashes, and 308 total incident reports. His death has been ruled an accident. “He was so likeable on screen, particularly as that character”.

Following the reports, many of his co-stars and friends, including Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto, J.J. Abrams and John Cho, paid tribute to the late star.
