England bowl against Sri Lanka in 3rd ODI
England were frustrated by the weather in their bid to take a 2-0 series lead against Sri Lanka in the third one-day worldwide in Bristol.
All-rounder Woakes had fine figures of three for 34 in his maximum 10 overs, including two wickets with his last two balls, after fast bowler Plunkett made early inroads on his way to three for 46. But forecast rain set in to prevent all but four overs of England’s reply – with the total a nascent, and inconclusive, 16 for one.
England can take a 2-0 lead here, with two left to play – but with forecast rain already showing its hand, the likelihood was that their chase may be complicated by Duckworth-Lewis calculations.
Sri Lanka’s Dinesh Chandimal en route to his fifty against England in the third ODI at Bristol.
On Friday, Sri Lanka had 34.1 overs in the field without any success as England won the second ODI at Edgbaston by ten wickets to go 1-0 up in the five-match series after Tuesday’s tie at Trent Bridge.
It was a very different story for Hales on Sunday when he was caught behind for a golden duck chasing a wide delivery from Suranga Lakmal.
Batsman Lahiru Thirimanne has left Sri Lanka’s ongoing tour of England after sustaining a lower-back strain, which restricted his movement.
Plunkett also struck in his first over, the ninth of the match, as Kusal Perera edged a short ball to Jos Buttler behind the stumps.
Chandimal and Mathews (56) got to work with another handy partnership, adding 80 this time to the 82 they put on to little eventual avail in Birmingham.
England can wrap up the series at The Oval on Wednesday.
Upul Tharanga also hit 40 as Plunkett and Chris Woakes led England’s bowling effort with three wickets apiece.
