With 1-0 loss to Colombia, US finishes 4th in Copa America
Jeff Carlisle covers MLS and the usa national team for ESPN FC.
Carlos Bacca’s 31st-minute goal gave Colombia a 1-0 victory over hosts the United States in Saturday’s third-place play-off in Phoenix. The Colombians also defeated them 2-0 in the tournament’s opening match. “It’s huge, so we’ll have our strongest team out there”.
Guzan did not have a great game against Argentina in the semifinals, but I do not believe there is any reason to switch goalies for the third place game.
“These are World Cup numbers – World Cup numbers for an event organized in seven months with 16 teams”, Gulati said. It’s really fun to watch this team grow. Yes, absolutely, but I think the performance was a wonderful performance. “But we had a talk already with the players and the staff to regroup now and to give it a go in Phoenix”, the Klinsman via his official Facebook page.
“We had good chances and we played well”, United States keeper Tim Howard said in a pitchside interview.
Expect a close game, although third-place matches often lack the intensity of other tournament fixtures.
A clever chip over the top from James picked out Arias and the full-back headed the ball across the six-yard box to Bacca, who sliced the ball into the net on the goal line.
The USMNT responded to coach Jurgen Klinsmann’s comments to play a more physical game, letting Colombia know there wouldn’t be easy routes to goal.
“It was a wonderful time, because they made it their tournament, they made it their thing”, Klinsmann said.
USA games have ranged from 1.5 million to 3.3 million viewers on Fox Sports 1, but some Copa games had a small audience: 138,000 for Haiti-Peru, and 148,000 for Ecuador-Peru, both on Fox Sports 2, were the lows.
“It was just one of those days”, Yedlin said.
“You see players who start to bloom….”
Bobby Wood is back! “We have to move the whole game further up the field”, Klinsmann noted.
Even though Klinsmann’s team created several chances, the German later bemoaned the players’ inability to finish. I thought for how aggressive we were being offensively we actually defended pretty well. “The final four is a big deal, but there is a lot still to learn, and hopefully we can do that in every Copa America from now on”.
“Hopefully we can take that straight into the Colombia game, get third place and turn it around”.
The US just can’t seem to beat Colombia.
