Phelps goes for 5th Olympics; Ledecky, Lochte in the pool
Approximately 2,000 swimmers have qualified for this year’s event.
It was four years ago and Pebley soaked in the atmosphere, watching and competing with some of the top swimmers in the world. The top two finishers will earn spots in Rio de Janeiro. “I think if I were to look back 20 years later at London, I would have been disappointed in myself, that I let myself down for how I prepared”.
Now training with Team Elite are former Olympians Ryan Lochte, Jimmy Feigen, Cullen Jones, Tyler Clary, Micah Lawrence, Camille Adams (all from the US), Kirsty Coventry (Zimbabwe), Roy Burch (Bermuda), Arianna Vanderpoole-Wallace (Bahamas), and Santo Condorelli (Canada) and U.S. National team members Katie Meile, Kathleen Baker, Madison Kennedy, Michael Chadwick and Phillips.
For swimming, Sunday’s events include the men’s 400-meter individual medley, 400-meter freestyle and 100-meter breastroke as well as the women’s 100-meter butterfly and 400-meter individual medley. Lochte will line up against the likes of Chase Kalisz and Tyler Clary, foes who have medaled at the World Championships in the 400 I.M.
“The gift of God, Michael Phelps – that’s what he did for us”, USA Swimming chief executive Chuck Wielgus said in 2013.
Then a week after the state swim meet, she qualified in the 400 IM with a time of 4:54.33 in a meet in College Station. “He stretches us out every day and I go into races feeling a lot looser and a lot more confident”.
“I think that’s the best thing about the journey that I’ve been on, and it’s been an exciting one”.
Pebley will swim the 100 backstroke prelims Monday with the finals on Tuesday evening. The 200 back starts Friday.
Arguably swimming’s greatest ever is making another run, this time at Rio.
Shreeve said his trip in 2012 was inspirational. “I’ve been through a lot more than when I was 17, so I have this new wisdom I’ve gained throughout the successes and the challenges”. “There are flames that shoot from the side of the pool when people touch the wall”. “I would love to make the top six, but that is not going to happen”.
A trio of big names sit atop the qualifiers in the 200 freestyle in Ledecky (1:54.43).
Should Lochte qualify for the 2016 Olympics, he will be headed to the biggest swim meet in the world for the fourth time.
“I was in first class, true, but still, it was a long travel day”, Lochte said Friday. “It’s an awesome feeling and it’s pretty cool – I mean the water was pretty cold at first”.
Utah allowed him to continue training for the event and Shreeve made it pay off.
Biles has been easing into the year, working a slightly watered down schedule geared toward having her peak by mid-summer.
“It was hard to tell if it was going to be enough or if the standard was going to drop drastically”, he said. “This is a good time”.
He will compete in the 200 backstroke on Thursday and the 1,500 on Saturday. “Looking forward to it, though”. “I’m rooming with Liz Pelton, and I thought it was really important for me to just be – just with the team and with my teammates and really try to get into the meet”.
The pool at CenturyLink Center is a temporary one, set up just for the two-week Olympic Trials.
