“Yeah, but back in the day they didn’t have the push-to-pass”, Montoya said. But the Australian had saved five bursts of “push-to-pass” turbo boost and he was able to keep Kanaan’s Ganassi Racing Chevrolet at bay. Cosworth got it sorted out but we lost 40 minutes of practice time in the first session and didn’t get the extra set of tires.

“The fracture doesn’t hurt, and I think I’ve got it in a place now where I can muscle the wheel”, Newgarden said. I’m really pleased with our tire usage with everything we faced in the first session.

With Power in front, the race reset with six laps to go following the only caution flag of the afternoon, stunting the momentum of points leader Simon Pagenaud, who was then in second place.
