‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ lacks fireworks at the box office

The Shallows is coming in with $16.7 million, which almost matches its budget, causing the shark vs. surfer thriller to land in fourth place behind Central Intelligence, which made $18.4 million in its second weekend for a combined box office of a little over $69 million.

Another big budget Hollywood sequel failed to have the expected impact at the box office over the weekend, as Roland Emmerich’s Independence Day: Resurgence opened to $41.6m of business in the US. The Independence Day sequel disappointed in its debut weekend, managing just $41.6 million domestically.

The original Independence Day, which went on to gross over $300 million at the domestic box office, opened with $50 million.

The new Dwayne Johnson and Kevin hart comedy Central Intelligence had a fairly strong second weekend with $18.37M.

Elsewhere this weekend, the Blake Lively-starring shark attack movie The Shallows took in $6.8 million on Friday and is estimated to end up with around $16 million for the weekend.

Animated movie sequel Finding Dory has sunk the competition at the US box office with a big second-week splash.

It cost $50m (£37.4m) to make. The film received mostly negative reviews.

Rounding-out the top-five this week was another new release, STX’s “Free State of Jones”.

Also new this weekend in America are: The Shallows at number 4 and Free State of Jones at number 5.

In North America, the collection is already up to an wonderful 287 million dollars just 10 days of release, posting a strong hold of -46% this weekend and holding the no.1 spot.

Nicolas Winding Refn’s The Neon Demon, a twisted take on the modeling industry, was D.O.A.at the box office, opening to an estimated $606,594 from 783 locations. The film is now on-track to become Disney’s highest-grossing film of 2016, and that’s saying something: The studio’s The Jungle Book has amassed $357.1 million total thus far, while Zootopia trails closely behind with $340.2 million and counting. A24’s Swiss Army Man and The Orchard’s Hunt for the Wilderpeople fared much better.
