Mysuru scion Yaduveer ties the knot
Mysore’s Wadiyar dynasty is hosting a royal wedding as “King” Yaduveer Wadiyar tied the knot with Rajasthani royalty Trishika Kumari Singh on Monday. This was followed by Chamaraja Wadiyar marrying Satyaprema Kumari of Bundelkhand and now Trishika comes from Dungarpur family in Rajasthan.
Marriage rituals have been underway since yesterday with the stamp of royal traditions.
As per the Wodeyar’s dynastic traditions, the elaborate wedding ceremony began with invocations to the royal family deity Hindu Goddess Chamundeshwari and worship of its raj-guru Abhinava Vagheesha Brahmatantra Swatantra swami of Parakala mutt amid chanting of Vedic hymns and Carnatic music.
As per customs, the rituals were held in Mysore Palace in the presence of Pramoda Devi, the Queen mother and other family elders.
Going by the euphoria exhibited by the people, especially in the old Mysuru region, when Yaduveer was coronated on May 28, a year ago; when he was adopted on February 23, 2015, and earlier when Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar died on December 10, 2013, media establishments had expected people’s participation. A battery of priests apparently performed the rituals to bind the two in holy matrimony.
Yaduveer was adopted on February 23, 2015 and crowned as the 27th Maharaja on May 28, 2015.
Pramoda Devi Wadiyar, widow of Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar, the last descendant of Wadiyar dynasty, formally adopted Yaduveera Gopal Raj Urs in February a year ago, as the couple had no children.
The guest list for the wedding is impressive, with royals from Rajasthan, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh in attendance.
The spread of 26 dishes, which included pheni, laddoos, badam milk, shavige payasa, chilli bajjis, ambodes, akki roti, kai tomato, yennegai gojju, channa masala, batura, and bisibele bath served with ghee and boondi, grapes gojju, mango chutney, thindora fry, beans palya, hesarubele and kosambari, was served on plantain leaf along with ice cream filled into mangoes hollowed by removal of their pulp. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his Cabinet colleagues, diplomats from several countries, and erstwhile royal families have been invited for the wedding, and receptions to be held on June 28 and July 2 in Mysuru and Bengaluru, respectively.
Mysore kings known as Wadiyars ruled present day Southern Karnataka for over 550 years.
People in the old Mysore region of Karnataka still revere Wodeyar rulers for their many contributions, such as the construction of the Krishnaraj Sagar dam across the Cauvery river and the establishment of many industries and educational institutions in the region. The whole of the Mysuru city was decked up for the royal wedding – the palace especially was a sight to behold.
