Canada Post workers could be off the job next week
Several cities have already issued advisories to residents over the potential disruption, advising them to get their property tax cheques in the mail before it’s too late.
The Crown corporation credited the profitable year to more parcel deliveries – where revenue has grown by $429 million since 2011 – and a price increase in 2014, along with improved productivity.
Postal workers are pleading with Canada Post to extend the cooling-off period by two weeks amid fears the company will terminate its collective agreement this weekend.
As a strike looms at Canada Post, Canadians are making other plans to pay their bills and send time sensitive documents. Union reps from the Stratford division – which also represents New Hamburg and area – told the Independent that they are looking at improvements to job security, pensions, health benefits and sick leave, among other things.
A work stoppage affecting 40,000 employees including both urban and rural delivery personnel is possible anytime on or after Saturday, July 2.

“We have implemented a pick up system so customers can pick up their letters at the service centre nearest to them”, said Ward Keith, MPI Vice-President of Communications.
A conciliator was brought in as negotiations resumed in early April and have continued on a regular basis for nearly three months, he said.
Contract negotiations are now underway. “We do not want to be on strike”, he said.
