Juncker presses Britain for quick exit and Farage insults MEPs — European Parliament
Mr Juncker said the will of the British people must be respected, prompting applause from UK Independence Party (UKIP) leader Nigel Farage, a key campaigner behind the leave vote.
Farage was later booed and laughed at by the other MEP’s while he was addressing the European Parliament.
“I’m really surprised that you are here”.
Juncker spoke from a desk next to that of UKIP leader Nigel Farage, who followed the largely French and German speech with headphones and with a British flag planted in front of him.
He also accused Farage of lying, saying he “fabricated reality”.
Cameron had earlier stated that Britain requires fresh leadership to negotiate the country’s exit from the EU.
Cameron will have a dinner with the other 27 European Union heads of government in Brussels.
– He rejected the argument that political chaos with the resignation of Prime Minister David Cameron and the no-confidence vote for the Labour Party leader are sending a bad message to the world about the U.K.’s stability. “We can not allow ourselves to remain in a prolonged period of uncertainty”.
Jean-Claude Juncker, the President of the EU Commission told the Parliament that Britain had to leave the bloc as soon as possible, while stressing he understood the article 50 could not be triggered “tomorrow or Thursday morning at 9 a.m”.
The immediate reaction to the British departure – also called the Brexit – in the European Union parliament was emotional Tuesday. “No notification, no negotiation”, Juncker said.
Commenting on the reports in German press, Juncker said, “I am neither exhausted nor sick”. “To my last breath I will fight for Europe, for a united Europe”.
To boos and jeers from much of the rest of the European Parliament in Brussels, Farage, a constant thorn in the side of the EU since he became a member of the assembly in 1999, spoke of his pride that he’d achieved his ultimate goal of Britain leaving the bloc.
Farage’s speech continued to analyze the reasons for the European Parliament’s reaction as he claimed that: “You, as a political project, are in denial”. You’re in denial that your currency is failing. “You imposed upon them a political union. And in doing so, we now offer a beacon of hope to democrats across the rest of European continent”. “We gonna get rid of the biggest waste in the European Union… your salary”.
Mr Farage said the EU Referendum was a “remarkable result”.
So let’s be pragmatic, sensible and realistic.
“Scotland did not let you down”, Smith said, addressing European politicians. “(…) The British people have spoken, and there must now be consequences”, he drummed out during the European Parliament extraordinary plenary session in Brussels. The British people have voted. “I’ve made a very clear command to all commissioners there can be no secret negotiations”.
“When I said to them, ‘Can we be grown up about this?”
Merkel warned the United Kingdom that it can not expect to keep only its privileges and shun obligations. Expressing strong confidence in the union as it confronts the first defection since its founding, Merkel said the EU would continue to be a guarantor of “peace, prosperity and stability” in Europe.
