Lady Gaga ‘banned from China’ after meeting Dalai Lama
According to The Guardian, this meeting has sparked an angry reaction from Beijing, were government officials have labelled the spiritual leader as a “wolf in monk’s robes”, an activist behind Tibetan independence.
Such meetings with the Dalai Lama often get foreign artists put on blacklists in China.
Chinese citizens have expressed outrage over the meeting on the internet, denouncing Lady Gaga, who is popular with many young Chinese.
In 1959, the Dalai Lama fled into exile and has long since insisted that he is merely working towards “greater autonomy from Chinese rule for Tibetans”.
Dalai Lama is often accused of separating the Himalayan region from China.
You won’t be hearing, or likely seeing, Lady Gaga in China anytime soon.
Lady Gaga, whose birth name is Stefani Germanotta, spoke with the Dalai Lama on the topics of hope and kindness at the U.S. Conference of Mayors in Indianapolis.
The pair met to discuss yoga, compassion and meditation in a 19-minute clip that has angered the country’s Communist Party, as well as her legions of Chinese fans. Fans are anxious that her public meetup with the spiritual leader would mean that she could be banned from entering China again.
“There is a broad consensus internationally about what kind of person the Dalai Lama is and what he does internationally”, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei told a regular briefing.
“We hope that people from the worldwide community can be fully aware of his true colors and nature”, Lei said.
A rep for Lady Gaga did not immediately respond to the Daily News’ request for comment.
Some fans of the singer have even claimed that they’ve had Instagram posts featuring the star censored.
The Dalai Lama answered questions Gaga, 30, chose from social media about how to deal with injustices in the world. Selena Gomez, Bon Jovi and band Maroon 5 are among those who have had their programmes cancelled because of their closeness with Tibetan spiritual guru.
