PM confident on NSG, says process has begun on positive note
When asked about India’s deepening relations with the USA in context with Pakistan, Modi claimed Indian relations with the United States are based on India’s own interests and Pakistan context is different and not comparable. NSG consists of 48 member states now, which includes the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council. India took the unusual step of point to “one country” as the one behind the procedural block. “But there are some issues in which we differ from them and they differ from us”.
It said India wanted to be the first exception to join the NSG without signing the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and this was what China and other countries did not agree to.
Will the U.S. be successful in making India a member of NSG without accepting China’s MTCR demand? But countries like Switzerland, Brazil and South Africa, which were among the objectors, can not be accused of acting at China’s behest. Brazil and South Africa, along with China, are India’s BRICS partners.
“Not sure what the gains to India are from membership in NSG as the country’s nuclear program has already achieved mastery in all three fuel cycles – uranium, plutonium and thorium”.
“India has to fight poverty”. And this is also the first ever interview by a sitting Prime Minister of India to a private television news channel in the country. India’s argument on “credentials” failed to find a response in China. But these efforts were of no avail. India had just missed subtle signals that could have prepared it for Seoul, officials who are now reviewing what happened at the plenary, diplomats from three countries that want riders with New Delhi’s membership and independent analysts have told The Telegraph.
Taking a dig at the prime minister over his remarks on the NSG issue, he wondered as to what was the point of saying Mexico and Switzerland were on India’s side?
What has dashed India’s hopes is power play. Without NSG membership, India has stated, it will not be able to officially join the Paris agreement on climate change reached in December. Evidently it wishes to hold India down at the same level as Pakistan, its all-weather friend.
“India is spoiled… The worldwide “adulation” of India makes the country a bit smug in global affairs”, said the report. He went on to make clear what exactly he meant by playing by rules. “Throwing a tantrum won’t be an option for New Delhi”, the Global Times editorial reads. One can say it remained silent or abstained but fact is that China didn’t oppose.
“If we never question Pakistan and keep “bowing down” to them then attacks like those in Pathankot and Pampore will continue”. When there are no obstacles when it comes to nuclear trade with the NSG countries, it was unnecessary.
Modi had sought Ireland’s support for NSG membership when he visited Dublin in September 2015.
“We were disappointed India was not admitted during this recent session, but we will continue to work constructively with India and all the NSG members on India’s accession in the months ahead”.
