Urias wins first, Dodgers edge Brewers 6-5
The Dodgers offense was complicit in the victory, providing a large enough cushion to give Urias relatively stress-free innings, and the lead gave manager Dave Roberts the piece of mind to stick with Urias after 85 pitches in his first five innings.
Former outfielder Greg Vaughn, who spent eight seasons with the Brewers, threw out a ceremonial first pitch. Milwaukee rallied in the 8th inning scoring three runs including a Jonathan Lucroy two-RBI double. He allowed four runs on seven hits in five innings and struck out three during his 72-pitch effort. The Crew opened the homestand by winning two of three over the Nationals. He is 1-2 with a 5.05 ERA in seven career starts against Los Angeles and has struggled against Gonzalez (6-for-13, one homer) and Yasmani Grandal (3-for-11, three homers). Keon Broxton and Aaron Hill were aboard via those walks with two down when Ryan Braun laced a first-pitch changeup into the gap in left-center for a double that tied it, 2-2.
Gonzalez has reached base five times at least once in 10 consecutive seasons.
Washington Nationals pitcher Shawn Kelley (27) celebrates with catcher Jose Lobaton (59) after picking up a save against the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park.
Urias walked Jonathan Villar in the first inning then picked him off – twice. The Dodgers got to Anderson for three more runs in the fourth, beginning with a triple by Corey Seager and double by Gonzalez, both into the right-field corner. First base umpire Toby Basner called Villar out the first time, but the Brewers challenged and the call was overturned on video replay.
The Nationals ended a seven-game losing streak with a 3-2 win over the Brewers.
Washington won despite being seemingly held without a hit into the sixth inning, when Anthony Rendon bounced a single over second base with one out.
Chris Carter almost tied the game with a home run, hitting ball to the deepest part of the ballpark in center field.
Urias can thank Joc Pederson for that. Lucroy scored from second on a super rare two-base sacrifice fly to trim the Dodgers’ lead to one.
The Brewers had their chances, but finished 0 for 10 with runners in scoring position.
Los Angeles Dodgers’ Joe Blanton tags Milwaukee Brewers’ Hernan Perez (14) not at home during the eighth inning of a baseball game Tuesday, June 28, 2016, in Milwaukee.
Kenley Jansen then retired the side in order in the ninth, a much cleaner inning, to complete the win. Brock Stewart will become the fourth Los Angeles starter to make his major league debut when he takes the mound Wednesday at Milwaukee, replacing Nick Tepesch, who was designated for assignment over the weekend. Junior Guerra starts for Milwaukee.
