Britain’s Labour leader refuses to step down despite losing confidence vote
Labour Party lawmakers are voting on Tuesday in a ballot of no-confidence in their leader Jeremy Corbyn after he rejected calls to resign, as the aftershocks of the Brexit referendum continue to wreak havoc across the U.K.’s political landscape.
“When unelected people like this come out of the shadows and accuse Labour MPs who are deeply anxious about the future of their country and the fact that the Labour Party faces an existential threat from the leader that we have, to then be accused by Jeremy’s unelected officials, who apparently never even attended a meeting of the Labour Remain campaign, is too much”, Mr Woodcock added.
“I was democratically elected leader of our party for a new kind of politics by 60% of Labour members and supporters, and I will not betray them by resigning”, he said in a statement.

There was a major rebellion over military intervention in Syria and although the party has won a succession of by-elections, its performance in May’s UK-wide elections – where it was pushed into third place in Scotland – raised concerns among MPs. Today’s vote by MPs has no constitutional legitimacy.
