Federer and Williams sisters return to Wimbledon quarters
If Kerber wins the Wimbledon title and Williams fails to reach the semifinals, she would take over the No. 1 ranking.
The seven-time champ beat unseeded American Steve Johnson 6-2, 6-3, 7-5 to set up a meeting next with No. 9 seed Marin Cilic.
The quarter-final line-ups for both the men’s and women’s are as follows.
Roger Federer reached his 14th Wimbledon quarter-final and tied Martina Navratilova’s all-time grand slam record of 306 match wins on Monday.
Pavlyuchenkova had only seven unforced errors, 15 fewer than Vandeweghe, and broke the American five times. Murray played solidly, closing with an ace on his third match point, and setting up a quarterfinal matchup with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
“The first set was very tight”.
After winning the first two sets decisively, Federer faced a much tougher Steve Johnson in the third set. “Nick lost his focus a bit in the middle part of that set”.
There was even a sense of anti-climax in Monday’s third round when he dispatched Australia’s enfant bad Nick Kyrgios easily – after all British fans have a masochistic fascination for drama when it comes to cheering home hopes.
I didnt think it was as easy as it maybe looked, the third-seeded Federer said.
He will next face Marin Cilic after the Croat defeated Kei Nishikori by retirement; the score was 6-1, 5-1 in Cilic’s favour when the Japanese fifth seed pulled the pin due to injury.
Federer recalled that the ninth seed “blew me away” the last time they met – in the semi-finals of the 2014 U.S. Open which Cilic went on to win – but this time round he was ready for anything the Croatian could throw at him.
“He brushed me off the court like I was nothing in the semis of the US Open a few years back, so I hope to get him back”, Federer said.
Quote of the day: “It was a good first set”.
He rallied to break the 34-year-old Federer in the fourth and sixth games of the third set but the former U.S. college champion was reeled in on both occasions.
“I hope I can win Wimbledon one more time”, Federer told reporters, a quizzical smile on his face, amused that anyone might for a nano-second think otherwise.
While Serena continues to be one of the most dominating players in women’s tennis, Venus has failed to live upto the expectations in the last several years.
The 26-year-old confirmed it was the same injury which forced him out of the Halle tournament in the run-up to Wimbledon. “I couldn’t compete today”, said Nishikori. Mahut’s lone break point opportunity came in the opening set and he did convert it, but he just as immediately allowed Querrey to break back.
He can take some inspiration from his pal and doubles partner, Sam Querrey, who ended No. 1 Novak Djokovic’s 30-match Grand Slam winning streak on Saturday. Querrey is the first American man to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals since Mardy Fish in 2011.
Querrey said he still hasn’t come down from his stunning upset of world number one Djokovic.
“I never thought I was going to have such a great career here at Wimbledon ever since I turned up here in 1998”. “I’m still here and I’m playing my match tomorrow”. “Enjoyed the hell out of that moment”.
Sixth-seeded Raonic recovered from two sets down for the first time in his career to eliminate 11th seed David Goffin 4-6 3-6 6-4 6-4 6-4.
On her third match point, Cibolkova hit an inside-out forehand victor, then dropped face first onto the grass, her chest heaving.
Men’s fourth-round match Tuesday: Resumption of No. 10 Tomas Berdych vs. Jiri Vesely.
Serena’s sister, five-time champion Venus, moved into the quarter-finals here for the first time since 2010, beating 12th seed Carla Suarez Navarro 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.
He faces French grass court specialist Nicolas Mahut, who holds a 2-0 lead over the American including a win on grass at ‘s-Hertogenbosch last month.
