SOUTH Essex MPs paid tribute to David Cameron after he announced his resignation – though most stopped short of backing a successor. If there are multiple candidates, Conservative lawmakers will whittle the shortlist down to two, and then party members nationwide will choose between them.
More than 80 Conservative MPs have called on David Cameron to remain as Prime Minister, regardless of the referendum result.
Cameron explained that he would remain in power until the Conservative Party have a new leader, who he would expect to be in place before the party conference in October this year.
Britain voted to leave the European Union by 52% to 48%.
Westminster speculation that Mr Corbyn could use a speech on the aftermath of the referendum to announce his resignation was denied by Labour, despite numerous party’s pro-Remain MPs expressing despair at what they see as his lacklustre performance in the campaign, ahead of a no confidence vote against him next week.
Britain will need to raise taxes and cut spending later this year to stabilize the public finances after last week’s shock vote to leave the European Union, finance minister George Osborne said on Tuesday.
“As an MP I now have the awesome responsibility to work with my colleagues in parliament and in government to ensure that the United Kingdom gets the best deal possible for the United Kingdom as we renegotiate our future relationship with Europe”.
“David Cameron has always said he is going to step down at some point and he has decided that it would be better in the long-term interests of the country for us to have a different leader”.
The pair want to create a “dream team” of blue-collar Cabinet Ministers to block Mr Johnson from entering Downing Street.
Among the 84 pro-Leave MPs on the list are some big names which include work and pensions minister Priti Patel, head of the Leave campaign Boris Johnson, former defence secretary Liam Fox, and the Tory candidate for London mayor, Zac Goldsmith.
“It is not a promise broken, I never said that through the course of the election, what I said was we will be able to spend the lion’s share of that money”, he said.
