Man stabs several at Jerusalem gay pride parade before being arrested
Six people taking part in an annual Gay Pride march in Jerusalem have been stabbed by an ultra-Orthodox Jewish man, police say.
The attacker, apparently an Orthodox Jew, has been caught.
The exact number of injuries has not been determined, but a paramedic said at least six people had been injured, with at least two of them in a serious condition.
The security breach happened despite the deployment of hundreds of police and volunteers protecting the marchers, whose authorised route is kept deliberately short and away from sensitive religious symbols.
The suspect, reported to be a haredi Orthodox man protesting Thursday’s parade, is in custody, according to reports.
In past years, ultra-Orthodox protesters have gathered in the Mea Shearim quarter to denounce what they consider the “abomination” of homosexuality.
There has been a violent attack of a gay rights parade in Israel.
The Jewish state repealed a ban on consensual same-sex sexual acts in 1988.
