Los Angeles struck back with three runs in the top of the sixth – consecutive singles from Simmons and Escobar and a stolen base knocked O’Sullivan out of the game to home crowd applause. Manager Mike Scioscia told fox sports.com, ” It comes at a good time just too hopefully get a little momentum going and hopefully we’ll carry it over to tomorrow”.
Buchholz gave up six runs – three earned – in 4 1/3 innings. Two runs in five innings looks a bit better, especially when you consider those two were allowed to score by Matt Barnes after a quick hook from John Farrell in the fifth.
Angels: LHP Hector Santiago (4-4, 5.27) returns after getting tagged for six runs on seven hits and walks in a no-decision Sunday against Oakland. The man is 28 years old and has pitched in the big leagues for the Angels, Royals, Padres, Phillies and, beginning this season, the Red Sox.
This opened the door for Perez, who cleared the bases with a three-run double to blow the game open. Ramirez followed with his slicing hit to right before scoring on Jackie Bradley Jr.’s single for a 4-0 lead.
Los Angeles Angels fans haven’t fully awakened from the state of shock, as the those who watched seemed to see a different team out there tonight. In 16 starts with a 9-2 record this year, Porcello has managed a 3.78 ERA with a 1.14 WHIP in 100 innings.
Angels: 3B Yunel Escobar returned to the lineup after missing seven straight with a tender left knee.
Red Sox: Farrell said switch-hitting OF/C Blake Swihart (sprained left ankle) took BP indoors, but only from the left side to avoid stress on the ankle.
Red Sox: RHP Sean O’Sullivan (1-0, 7.94) is slated to start for Boston. The manager also said that RHP Joe Kelly (demoted to the minors last month) threw a 40-pitch session Saturday as he works to come back from a groin injury.
There were one-run wins for the San Diego Padres (2-1 over the New York Yankees), New York Mets (4-3 over the Chicago Cubs), Detroit Tigers (3-2 over the Tampa Bay Rays) and Chicago White Sox (7-6 over the Houston Astros).
If the Boston Red Sox pitching staff hasn’t yet hit rock bottom, then the ground is rapidly approaching.
