Williams is seeking her seventh Wimbledon title and 22nd Grand Slam trophy overall to match Steffi Graf’s Open era record.
But on this occasion the six-times Wimbledon champion was too hot to handle, beginning the match as if late for an Independence Day appointment, serving a succession of aces and then hitting a brace of groundstroke winners, one off each wing, to break the Russian in the fourth game.
Williams’ sister Venus had a tougher day at the office but also went through thanks to a 7-6 6-4 success against Spaniard Carla Suarez.
Men’s quarterfinals Wednesday: No. 2 Andy Murray vs. No. 12 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, No. 3 Roger Federer vs. No. 9 Marin Cilic, No. 6 Milos Raonic vs. No. 28 Sam Querrey, No. 32 Lucas Pouille vs. No. 10 Thomas Berdych or Jiri Vesely.

In the women’s draw, world No. 1 Serena Williams was forced to overcome a rain delay and a spirited Svetlana Kuznetsova in the first set before racing away to a 7-5, 6-0 fourth-round win.
Querrey, who beat Frenchman Nicolas Mahut 6-4 7-6(5) 6-4, on reaching his first grand slam quarter-final.
Querrey, a Thousand Oaks High graduate, said it was important for him, career-wise, to maintain his momentum after beating Djokovic, lest people look at that upset as “fluky”. Her best result at a Grand Slam tournament came in 2014 when she reached the Australian Open final, losing to Li Na.
Querrey, the 28th seed, is the first American in the last eight at Wimbledon since Mardy Fish in 2011.
The 34-year-old, an eight-time Wimbledon finalist, will next play Russian 21st seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, a 6-3, 6-3 victor over Coco Vandeweghe of the United States. She’ll next face Yaroslava Shvedova.
Williams won the last 17 points she served.
Before that, bride-to-be Dominika Cibulkova beat world No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska 6-3, 5-7, 9-7 to secure her first Wimbledon quarter-final berth since 2011.

Roger Federer of Switzerland celebrates after beating Steve Johnson of the U.S in their men’s singles match on day eight of the Wimbledon Tennis Championships in London, Monday, July 4, 2016.
Nishikori was trailing 6-1, 5-1 when he made a decision to follow the advice of his coach Michael Chang, who could be heard saying, “Don’t push it, it’s not worth it”.
The Japanese fifth seed, who had been given a pill by the trainer at the previous change of ends, then indicated he could no longer continue and shook hands with Cilic. Not that he was aware of either: “It’s probably going to be something I’m happy I achieved looking back when it’s all said and done. Hopefully it’s a nice pivotal match for me”. You can always lose a tournament in the first week but never win it.
The next four games in the set went with serve meaning that Federer had to serve at 5-3 for the second set.
Cilic had taken the first set in just 16 minutes, allowing Nishikori only seven points.
