Gomez ruled out of Euro 2016 with hamstring injury
Germany midfielder Sami Khedira is set to miss the rest of Euro 2016 because of a groin injury, report Kicker.
Striker Gomez, who had forced his way into the squad after a 28-goal season with Turkish champions Besiktas, had played his way into Low’s starting XI with two goals at the finals.
FILE– Germany’s Mario Gomez lies injured on the pitch during the Euro 2016 quarterfinal soccer match between Germany and Italy, at the Nouveau Stade in Bordeaux, France, Saturday, July 2, 2016.
Khedira and Schweinsteiger will be harder to replace should they fail to be fit for Thursday’s semi.
“It is now in doubt whether Schweinsteiger and Khedira will be able to take any part on Thursday in Marseille or in a possible final in Saint Denis on Sunday”, the DFB said in a statement.
The 29-year-old had played in every match of the tournament so far as Germany eye a fourth continental title but like captain Schweinsteiger he is doubtful for the rest of the tournament. “Mario Gomez also had muscular problems, but I think he came off early enough”.
Bayern Munich player Hummels was booked late in regulation time of his side’s 6-5 shoot-out victory over Italy, after their clash here on Saturday finished locked at 1-1. He has shown strong performances at the European Championship and the team has been helped by his goal.
“For us it means we must accept the new situation and find solutions, and that’s what we’ll do”, Loew said. The quality of our squad is high, I have full confidence in all our players.
Schweinsteiger has been diagnosed with a ligament strain in his right knee.
