Wildly popular Icelandic TV commentator is a worldwide hit
An Icelandic football commentator has become a social media sensation following his call of the national team’s late victor against Austria at Euro 2016. “It’s extra sweet for us”. “From the day, all that matters is we are in the last 16”.
It just doesn’t get better for tiny Iceland.
After qualifying in a group in which it defeated Netherlands twice, few were going to take Iceland lightly but its performances have been hugely impressive for a group of players who have never experienced the pressures tournament football.
For the final 30 minutes, Austria was camped in the Iceland half, with Arnason standing out for Iceland with two crucial blocks off goal-bound shots.
“Iceland has to have the flawless game, we have to have our best game and we know that and we say that when we play the best team, we just have to play our best and that’s what we have to do”.
“Icelanders know everything about English football”. It’s extra fun to do this with my best friends.
Iceland’s victory, which came deep in stoppage time, has earned the team a mouthwatering round of 16 match against England in Nice Monday – a prospect previously described as a “dream” by captain Aron Gunnarsson. An estimated 10,000 Iceland fans attended Wednesday’s game – nearly one in 30 citizens of the nation of 330,000.
With a population of about 330,000, which is roughly the size of English city Leicester, home to the newly-crowned Premier League champions, Iceland were cheered on by a strong contingent of noisy fans wearing the side’s blue colours. I don’t fully understand how we’ve managed to do this. I know probably 50% of the crowd – or at least recognise them!
“I think everyone knows Iceland has to have the flawless game”.
After not scoring in his team’s opening two draws, Ronaldo, 31, broke out at Stade de Lyon to increase his record haul with his 59th and 60th career goals.
Austria dominated much of the game thereafter and missed a great chance to equalize in the 37th when defender Aleksandar Dragovic struck the post with his penalty.
In the end, Portugal finished behind them and only progressed as one of the best third-placed sides – something that brought a wry smile to Bjarnason’s face.
Austria head coach Marcel Koller insists he only substituted start midfielder David Alaba against Portugal because he needed a rest. We have played nearly the same players and there were a lot of exhausted players.
