Some Wimbledon stars aren’t happy with Nike’s tennis dress
Finally, there’s Eugenie Boucard, who not only wore the dress, but made sure to promote it on Instagram.
“I didn’t feel comfortable showing that much”, German player Sabine Lisicki said at a press conference.
The queen of the Nike negligée, Genie Bouchard, will debut her Nike dress on Tuesday when she plays Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia.
Bouchard said she loved the dress.
“When I was serving, it was coming up, and I felt like the dress was just everywhere”, she told The New York Times, “In general, it’s quite simple, the dress, but it was flying everywhere”.
The babydoll-style Premier Slam dress has been dubbed the Nike “nightie” because of its skimpy design and flimsy material that left little to imagination. Her opponent Donna Vekic, wore the “baby doll dress” though.
I’m no Wimbledon champ, but I’ve got a hunch that this dress fails to meet the one and only inarguable mandate of athletic wear: Don’t distract or hamper the athlete.
In a comment to TODAY, Nike representative Matthew Kneller shot down rumors of a potential recall.
“For me, the most important thing is to feel comfortable”, she added.
Nike’s super-short pleat-tastic dress is definitely white, but it has a potentially indecent habit of flying up, particularly when players serve the ball, exposing midriffs and skintight white spandex shorts.
“I think it’s a very pretty dress, and I think that it’s very feminine”, Sakkari said.
“They are flexible. I mean, if you don’t feel really comfortable with something you can ask them and it’s no problem”.
It has been suggested that the £75 (S$135.70) dress was to blame for Brit star Katie Swan losing her match earlier this week.
In 2003 at the US Open, she showed off the results of her training by wearing a tight-white vest with a bum-skimming skirt more suited for a nightclub.
She said it was one of her favourite tennis outfits. She won in straight sets. “It’s nice and short so you can move around and be free with your movements”.
“I know from experience of watching the boys, you have to get the clothing right, the footwear right because these are partly the tools of your trade so it has to be functional for what it is that you need to do”.
Bouchard, whose match against Magdalena Rybarikova was interrupted by rain this morning, says she likes the dress.
“I think Nike has been really good about making things, designing with me to make things that look good, play good essentially”, Williams told reporters.
Serena instead wore a tighter version, complete with a higher neckline and nipped in waist yesterday in her winning game against Amra Sadikovic.
