Orioles hit 4 HRs to beat Rays 8-6 for doubleheader sweep

The Baltimore Orioles look to complete a sweep of the Tampa Rays when they meet up today at 1:35PM ET. Maybe they were saving it for the nightcap.

Baltimore’s power sparked another comeback victory. Jones hit an RBI single off Erasmo Ramirez (7-6) and Davis greeted Xavier Cedeno with a run-scoring single.

But in addition to the power, the Baltimore defense stepped up again. Jones would come back up in the last of the seventh, and his RBI-single tied the game at six.

“There are some guys that can get to it but most can’t finish it off”, Orioles manager Buck Showalter said.

“Huge play”, Showalter said. The catch was frustrating because of the score and the fact that Moore ended up being flawless through four innings.

Gausman took a two-hitter into the eighth inning to earn his first win of the season, and the Baltimore Orioles extended Tampa Bay’s losing streak to nine games with a 5-0 victory Saturday in the opener of a day-night doubleheader.

Francisco Pena singled in a run off Tyler Sturdivant in the sixth, and Pedro Alvarez made it 5-0 with a two-run single in the seventh.

Dylan Bundy pitched three scoreless innings, striking out four.

Britton has posted saves in all 23 of his save opportunities. Manny Machado and Jonathan Schoop each had three.

After the Orioles used a walk and two singles to load the bases against Smyly (2-8) with no outs in the first inning, Davis hit an opposite-field drive into the left-field seats.

Yovani Gallardo gave up three runs after just four batters but recovered to not permit any more runs and went 5 1/3 innings in his second start since returning from the disabled list. Desmond Jennings got an RBI double, and Conger walked with the bases loaded to give the Rays a 4-0 lead.

The Baltimore Orioles caught the right opponent at just the right time.

Logan Forsythe led off with a double, Dickerson homered on the game’s fifth pitch and Evan Longoria followed with a double.

Wieters hit a two-run homer in the fourth but the Rays bounced back with two in the fifth.

That would have been a back-breaking home run for the Orioles, as they would have then trailed 7-0.

“Long day at the ballpark”, manager Kevin Cash said. We just came up short. “We’re competing. The effort is there”.

Tampa Bay will be bringing in outfielder Oswaldo Arcia, whom the team got in a trade with the Twins on Friday. But Baltimore’s done fine in them anyway, going 6-1. Tampa Bay scored a run in the first inning of this game, breaking a streak of 17 consecutive innings without one. Before this outing, the left-hander was 4-0 with a 1.82 ERA in eight career games against Baltimore.
