U.S. college students among dead in Dhaka siege
In a rescue operation by Bangladeshi paramilitary troops, at least six attackers were killed, one was arrested and 13 hostages were rescued.
Abinta Kabir and Faraaz Hossain, both students at Emory’s Oxford College campus, were trapped inside the Holey Artisan Bakery when the terrorists stormed there.
Tarishi Jain, an Indian national, was working on e-commerce growth at Eastern Bank Limited in Dhaka through an internship with UC Berkeley’s Subir and Malini Chowdhury Center for Bangladesh Studies, a statement from the university said.
“I was saddened to learn this morning that one of the victims is Abinta Kabir, a college student from Miami who was visiting family and friends”, Rubio said in a statement. Kabir was from Miami, Florida, the school said.
Wagner said he had been in touch with Abinta’s mother and that she was in “unspeakable pain” over her daughter’s death.
“Please, as you are inclined, direct your kindest thoughts and sincerest prayers in her behalf and that of her family”, Wagner wrote.
The university is offering support to members of its Oxford, Ga., community through counseling services. Hossain, who was from Dhaka, had completed his second year at Oxford and was headed to the business school in the fall.
Sushma Swaraj, India’s Minister for External Affairs, confirmed the news on Twitter earlier Saturday.
ISIS gunmen stormed the restaurant and killed 20 hostages before the siege ended almost 12 hours later.
The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria have claimed credit for the attack, but USA officials were not certain.
