‘Finding Dory’ Tops the Box Office; Brings in $73.2 Million
Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst with comScore, said that the overall weekend was almost identical in total box office gross to the same weekend a year ago when “Jurassic World” and “Inside Out” dominated the multiplex.
Animated movie sequel Finding Dory has sunk the competition at the US box office with a big second-week splash. This marks the largest second weekend for an animated film in America. Resurgence placed second with revenue of US$41.6 million, short of forecasts. The film, featuring the voice talents of Ellen DeGeneres, Diane Keaton and Ed O’Neill, has now hauled in over $396 million (£289.3 million) at the global box office. The film also received a poor 33 percent of recommending rate from critics on RottenTomatoes.
“Independence Day: Resurgence” played to an audience that was 58 percent male vs 42 percent female, with 64 percent of audience over the age of 25.
In North America, the collection is already up to an unbelievable 287 million dollars just 10 days of release, posting a strong hold of -46% this weekend and holding the no. 1 spot.
Even though it had a massive marketing campaign with headliner Matthew McConaughey appearing all over the televison interview shows, “Free State of Jones” only mustered $7.8 million putting it in 5th place.
The film, however, manages to top the worldwide charts with $102.1 million in 57 markets.
