O’Sullivan helps Red Sox bounce back, beat Angels 10-5
Los Angeles Angels manager Mike Scioscia walks to the mound to take starting pitcher Matt Shoemaker out of the game during the fifth inning of a baseball game against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park in Boston, Sunday, July 3, 2016.
Boston Red Sox’s Christian Vazquez, right, can not handle the throw, allowing Los Angeles Angels’ C.J. Cron (24) to score on a sacrifice fly by Andrelton Simmons during the second inning of a baseball game in Boston, Saturday, July 2, 2016. After being down 7-0, the Halos made a little comeback of their own in the sixth and the seventh; doubles were the name of the game, and two-baggers from Albert Pujols, Kole Calhoun and Yunel Escobar all had the Angels pulling within a 7-5 deficit by the time the bottom of the seventh rolled around, but then the Red Sox would just pile some more on, making their valiant efforts ultimately fruitless.

“We were sitting down: me, Nava and (Jhoulys) Chacin”, Santiago said. “We know what the schedule says, but we needed every energy to focus on today after what has taken place up to this point”. “There’s really no other way to put it. We got kicked around the ballpark tonight”.
Mookie Betts and Ortiz had three hits apiece for Boston. The lefty has lost his last three starts, giving up 14 runs in 11 1/3 innings.
With Los Angles leading 4-0 in the fifth, Perez’s three-run double capped a five-run inning that broke it open. Escobar lined a pitch towards the triangle – Bradley ran it down with a small leap and whirled to throw out Bandy trying to retreat to second base.
The left fielder said he took some razzing in the dugout, but joked that his drive counted as much as if he hit one where former Red Sox player and Hall of Famer Ted Williams was reported to have hit the longest drive ever in Fenway Park – 502 feet away in right in 1946. Travis Shaw then fired high to second for an error on a probable double-play grounder by Pujols, with the relay late to first.
After striking out center fielder Shane Robinson, Light then relinquished a solo shot to Cron, a double to Giavotella, and a two-run bomb to Perez to round up an 11-run stanza for the Angels. The knuckleballer struggled in the weather and the Angels loaded the bases with nobody out for Cron, who drove a 3-2 pitch over the Green Monster.
Pujols is eight behind Mark McGwire for 10th on the career homer list.
– Koji Uehara enjoyed a 1-2-3 eighth inning to keep Boston’s 10-5 lead intact.
Angels: 3B Escobar played his second straight game after missing seven in a row because of a tender left knee. He batted leadoff and went 1 for 4 before being lifted for a pinch runner.
457 in his limited time this season – the Red Sox have a chance to get production from the part of the lineup that was so deadly earlier in the year. When healthy, the plan is to shift him to relief and prepare him to work out of Boston’s bullpen. Big Papi went 1-for-3 with a run, two walks and an RBI. Rick Porcello (9-2, 3.78 ERA) will start for Boston in the 1:35 p.m. ET contest against Rangers righty Nick Martinez (1-1, 5.00 ERA).
