FIR Against: AAP Leader Ashish Khaitan Punjab For Hurting Religious Sentiments
In a major development, the Punjab Police has booked AAP national leader Ashish Khetan on charges of hurting religious sentiments of Sikhs on the basis of a complaint made by Karnail Singh Peer Mohammed, President All India Sikh students fedration(AISSF). Khaitan, while campaigning for the upcoming assembly elections in Punjab, had reportedly compared Guru Granth Sahib with AAP manifesto, upsetting the religious sentiments of Sikhs. “Mr Khetan has apologised publicly and his statements had no intention to hurt the religious sentiments of anybody”. The party also apologised for the picture of its symbol, the broom, on the photo of the Golden Temple on the manifesto’s cover. “The case was registered late last night”.
AAP’s Punjab convener Sucha Singh Chhotepur sought to clarify the issue, saying Khetan did not intend to hurt religious sentiments of any community.
Meanwhile, the incidence has already taken a political colour.
The manifesto was released by Delhi chief minister and AAPconvener Arvind Kejriwal at the function in Amritsar.
When contacted, a senior party leader said the meeting was “informal”.
AAP legislator Naresh Yadav has been questioned on June 24 in regard to Quran sacrilege in Malerkotla in Sangrur district.
Khetan, in Khanna, said the party never “intended to undermine any section, community or any individual”.
The rookie party hopes to replicate its monster victory in Delhi previous year in the 2017 assembly polls in Punjab, and is seen as a strong contender against the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP and opposition Congress.
